What is Lymphoedema?
The lymphatic system carries clear, watery fluid which drains out from small blood vessels into the body tissues. It helps the body get rid of toxins, waste and harmful material including infections and cancer cells. This system of tubes and lymph nodes runs throughout the body. If any part of the lymph vessels or nodes are removed, damaged or blocked, it can cause a build-up of fluid causing swelling known as lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema Following Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK. Approximately 20% of sufferers develop secondary lymphoedema, commonly affecting the arm. This is due to surgery to remove the axillary (armpit) lymph nodes or from radiotherapy to this area. After breast cancer, a person may be dealing with psychological and emotional difficulties relating to altered body image and a swollen arm can exacerbate this. The symptoms of lymphoedema include:

-
Swelling and tightness
-
Discomfort and heaviness
-
Dry skin
-
Arm stiffness
-
Hardness (fibrosis)
Lymphoedema is a long-term condition meaning that once developed, it is unlikely to go away completely. There are various ways to manage the condition and if you think you may have symptoms, you should visit your GP who can refer you to a specialist.
The Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) Technique
There have been many research studies to date showing the effectiveness of RLD in reducing swelling, pain and improved quality of life. Measurements are taken of the affected limb before and after each session, which show the loss of fluid as a result of regular treatments. Details of RLD research and case studies by Sally Kay can be found HERE.

Reflexology Lymph Drainage is not limited to those who have had breast cancer but can be beneficial to clients with primary lymphoedema and auto-immune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome/ME and many other inflammatory conditions.
The results of Reflexology Lymph Drainage can be truly amazing to witness. It is a very gentle and therapeutic treatment suitable for most people and can be life-changing!
